Gabriel

“Coach Gabriel!”

Before the footballs even come out, children are already running toward him.

Some want to tell him about school. Others want to show him a new move they practiced during the week. A few simply want his attention before training begins.

Watching those moments, it’s hard to imagine there was a time when Gabriel was standing where they are now.

He wasn’t always the coach.

Years ago, he was simply another young man looking for direction in a community where many children grew up believing their future had already been decided.

In the indigenous communities of southern Mexico, poverty has shaped life for generations. As children grow older, many leave home hoping to find opportunity elsewhere. Too often, they encounter exploitation, violence, or the influence of cartels waiting to offer a sense of belonging the world around them has failed to provide.

Gabriel grew up watching those stories unfold.

When he first joined Saved by Soccer, he expected to learn football. Instead, he found something he never expected.

People who believed in him.
Coaches who kept showing up.
A community that reminded him his life had purpose.

Looking back, he says it simply:

“I realized this was more than soccer. It was hope.”

That hope didn’t end with Gabriel.

It multiplied.

Today, he is the one standing on the touchline, welcoming children the same way someone once welcomed him. Every practice is an opportunity to encourage a child, listen to their story, celebrate their victories, and remind them they are deeply loved by God. Football may bring them onto the field, but relationship is what keeps changing lives.

Gabriel knows that many of the children arriving each week are carrying burdens that have nothing to do with football. Some come from families facing deep financial hardship. Others are growing up surrounded by instability, addiction, or violence. Many are searching for the same thing Gabriel was searching for years ago—a place to belong and someone who genuinely believes in them.

That is why he keeps showing up.

Not because he hopes every child becomes a great football player, but because he believes every child deserves the opportunity to become the person God created them to be.

Today, nearly 90 percent of the children participating in Gabriel’s academy are still in school and still living with their families.

Those numbers matter.

But Gabriel would probably tell you they are only part of the story.

The greater miracle is watching children begin to dream again. Watching boys discover that strength looks like character instead of violence. Watching friendships replace isolation. Watching families slowly grow stronger because someone chose to invest in their children before the world convinced them they didn’t matter.

This is what INfire has always believed.

Lasting transformation rarely begins with outside solutions. It begins when local leaders are equipped to love, disciple, and protect the children in their own communities. It begins when someone who was once mentored becomes the mentor. When someone who once needed hope becomes the person who carries hope to others.

Gabriel often says football brought him onto the field, but it was hope that kept him there.

And today, that same hope is being passed from one generation to the next—one practice, one conversation, and one child at a time.
